Featured Project: McNab House & Botanical Gardens
The McNab House & Botanical Gardens project is one of Pompano Beach’s most meaningful preservation and redevelopment efforts. The historic McNab House was built in 1926 by Robert A. McNab, a member of one of the city’s early pioneer families. Robert McNab and his brother William “Harry” McNab came to Pompano in the late 1890s, farmed in the area, and played a role in the early development of the community.
For many years, the McNab House stood along Atlantic Boulevard. As the city grew, the home became vulnerable to demolition. Instead of losing this important piece of local history, preservation supporters and the Pompano Beach CRA helped relocate the structure to McNab Park in 2020.
Today, the project is moving forward as a future destination that will combine historic preservation, botanical gardens, dining, public programming, and community gathering space.
The Project Vision
The McNab House & Botanical Gardens is planned as a place where history, nature, and community come together. The City of Pompano Beach CRA unveiled the master plan in January 2025, following community input and planning. The updated design includes an immersive sensory garden, a restaurant with an expanded outdoor patio, and an event pavilion.
The restored McNab House is expected to be adaptively reused as a restaurant, allowing the public to experience the historic structure in an active and welcoming way. The surrounding gardens will help create a peaceful outdoor destination for residents, families, students, visitors, and history lovers.
Botanical Gardens
The botanical gardens will be designed to complement the historic McNab House and highlight the natural beauty of South Florida. The garden setting will help frame the house while offering visitors a place to walk, relax, learn, and gather.
The master plan includes an immersive sensory garden, which is intended to engage visitors through sight, scent, sound, texture, and movement. This type of garden can offer a more interactive experience for children, families, seniors, and people of all ages.
Restaurant and Outdoor Patio
A key part of the project is the adaptive reuse of the McNab House into a restaurant. This approach allows the historic home to remain active and accessible instead of being preserved as a static structure.
The planned expanded outdoor patio will connect the dining experience to the gardens, creating a unique setting that blends history, hospitality, and landscape design.
Event Pavilion and Community Use
The event pavilion will make the site more flexible for public and private gatherings. Once complete, the property may support community celebrations, educational programs, garden tours, lectures, music events, cultural programming, and special events.
The goal is to create a space that belongs to the community and can be used in many different ways throughout the year.
